01 · What it is

PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) means dark marks left after skin has been irritated or injured, such as after acne, eczema, insect bites, scratches or razor bumps. It is common in melanin-rich skin and can take time to fade.

Melasma is different. It often appears as patchy brown or grey-brown areas on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip and may be affected by hormones, sun and heat. The two can look similar but need different care, so we diagnose before recommending treatment.

02 · How it works

Your dermatologist identifies the likely cause and builds a plan. Depending on the diagnosis, care may include prescription skincare, sun protection, a peel or an energy-based treatment.

Melanin-rich skin can develop darker marks after irritation. We choose treatment carefully, use appropriate settings where devices are involved and explain the risk of temporary or persistent pigment change before you decide.

10 · Frequently asked questions

A few helpful answers

Melasma can often be managed, but it is not considered cured. Sun, heat and hormonal factors can trigger it again, so maintenance is part of the plan.
